- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter, divided, plus more for bread
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 8 slices rye bread
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 tablespoons Thousand Island or burger sauce (optional)
